  • Regional Training Programme on the System of National Accounts 2008: Fifth Regional Workshop on Changes in 2008 SNA, Greater Noida, India [22 - 26 April 2013]
    The Fifth Regional Workshop on Changes in 2008 SNA was conducted from 22 to 26 April 2013 in Greater Noida, India in collaboration with the National Academy of Statistical Administration (NASA) of the Central Statistics Office (CSO), Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation, Government of India.
    The objectives of the workshop are to strengthen the capacity of national statistical systems in implementing the recommendations of 2008 SNA and to review the current compilation practices for purposes of improving the quality and coverage of national accounts statistics of the respective countries.    Read more...

        25 Statisticians Discussed Integration of a Gender Perspective into Official Statistics in Asia [16 – 19 April 2013]

    A regional Workshop on Improving the Integration of a Gender Perspective into Official Statistics was held from 16 to 19 April 2013 in Chiba, Japan. The workshop was organized by the United Nations Statistics Division (UNSD) and the Statistical Institute for Asia and the Pacific (SIAP), in cooperation with the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) of the Government of Japan.         19 statisticians from 13 countries complete two-month course on analysis, interpretation and use of official statistics [21 January – 22 March 2013]

    Nineteen (19) middle level government statisticians from 13 countries (Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Kosovo, Lao PDR, Mozambique, Myanmar, Philippines, Senegal, Swaziland, Tajikistan, Tonga, and Vietnam) successfully completed the Third Group Training Course on Analysis, Interpretation and Use of Official Statistics (Economic Statistics) conducted by the Statistical Institute for Asia and the Pacific (SIAP) from 21 January to 22 March 2013. The course was conducted in cooperation with Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communication (MIC) of the Government of Japan.    Read more...

        Training Course on Gender Statistics for Officials of the National Bureau of Statistics of China, Chiba, Japan
    [15 - 19 October 2012]

    The course was to strengthen capacity in gender statistics through achieving better understanding of and learning from the Japanese system related to the production, dissemination, analysis and utilization of sex-disaggregate data. SIAP Director Margarita Guerrero facilitated discussions on international frameworks for gender statistics, core gender statistics and indicators and methodologies for collecting and compiling time-use statistics and statistics on VAW.   • Fifth Regional Workshop on Statistical Quality Management and Fundamental Principles of Official Statistics: National Quality Assurance Frameworks, Tehran, Islamic Republic of Iran [30 September – 3 October 2012]
    The Fifth Regional Workshop on Statistical Quality Management and Fundamental Principles of Official Statistics was conducted jointly by the United Nations Statistical Institute for Asia and the Pacific (SIAP) and the ESCAP Statistics Division, from 30 September to 3 October 2012, in Tehran, Islamic Republic of Iran, in collaboration with the Statistical Centre of Iran. This series of regional courses/workshops on statistical quality management has been conducted since 2005 and the theme of the fifth workshop is “National Quality Assurance Frameworks”. The regional workshop will bring together senior or middle-level managers of national statistical organizations in Asia and the Pacific who have existing quality frameworks and who wish to review these through the lens of the generic national quality assurance framework (NQAF) template endorsed by the 43rd session of the United Nations Statistical Commission in February 2012.     The Statistical Institute for Asia and the Pacific (SIAP), in collaboration with the ESCAP Statistics Division (ESCAP-SD) and the Department of National Planning (DNP), Government of Maldives, conducted a Country Training Workshop on Introduction to STATA Software for Data Analysis from 12-20 September 2012. The DNP and SIAP consider the training of officials of the statistical offices in the Government of Maldives on STATA software for survey data analysis of utmost importance for strengthening the statistical capability of the country.   Read more...

        Regional Workshop on Production and Use of Vital Statistics
    [3 – 7 September 2012, Daejeon, Republic of Korea]

    Improving accuracy and timeliness of vital statistics demands better coordination and stronger collaboration among statistical agencies, ministries of health and civil registration authorities. This is especially needed for improving completeness of death registrations and recording causes of death. These issues were discussed at the Regional Workshop on Production and Use of Vital Statistics by 15 participants from 12 countries, mainly statisticians working in the areas of vital statistics compilation from registration records and estimating key vital statistics from population censuses and change surveys and demographic and health surveys.    Read more...

  •                  Third Group Training Course in Production and Development of Official Statistics in support for National Development including the Achievement of MDGs, Chiba, Japan
    [20 August - 21 December 2012 ]

    The opening ceremony of the Third Group Training Course in Production and Development of Official Statistics in support for National Development including the Achievement of MDGs (PDOS-3) was held at SIAP premises in Chiba, Japan on 21 August 2012. Ms. Margarita F. Guerrero, Director of SIAP; Mr. Nobuhiko Hanazato, Director General, Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), Tokyo International Center; and Mr. Takao Itou, Director General for Policy Planning (Statistical Standards), Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) welcomed the participants. Representatives from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Government of Japan and Institute of Developing Economies, Japan External Trade Organization (IDE-JETRO) also joined the ceremony to welcome the course participants.    Read more...

  • Statisticians and planners to take joint actions to increase use of census data in development planning process in the Pacific [13 – 17 August 2012]
    Participants attending the just concluded Sub-regional Training Workshop on the 2010 Population and Housing Census Data Analysis for Planners set targets and identified specific steps that they would take to increase the use of census data in the development planning process of their countries. The planning officials, official statisticians, UNFPA programme officers and undergraduate students in official statistics from Cook Islands, Fiji, Kiribati, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Solomon Islands and Tonga called for more dialogue between statisticians and planners in setting targets, identifying relevant indicators for monitoring progress in achieving development goals and using census data for situation analyses and measuring progress.
    Experts on population censuses, development planning and policy making, statistical indicators and measurements, demographic analyses, labour, migration and gender analyses, and data presentation gave lectures and facilitated group discussions.
    The 5-day workshop was jointly organised by the Statistical Institute for Asia and the Pacific (SIAP), a regional institution of ESCAP, the ESCAP Pacific Office, the UNFPA Subregional Office for the Pacific, and the University of South Pacific Faculty of Business and Economics. The workshop is one of a series of training courses on population and housing censuses funded by the UNFPA-SIAP Project on the “Statistical capacity building for undertaking the 2010 Round Population and Housing Census integrated with gender concerns".    Read more...

  • e-Learning Course on Introduction to System of National Account (2008 SNA) [1 August- 30 September 2012]
    The “e-Learning Course on Introduction to System of National Accounts (2008 SNA)” was conducted from 1 August to 30 September 2012 in collaboration with Tokushima University of Japan. The objective of the course is to provide an overview of the 2008 SNA as a framework for macroeconomic statistics. This course is designed for junior-level government statisticians and prior knowledge of SNA is not required. Those with long experiences in compiling national accounts may also find the course useful for updating their knowledge on the 2008 SNA. A maximum number of 50 participants from the national statistical offices and related ministries in the ESCAP region will be accepted for the course.    Read more...

  • Regional training workshop on population and housing census documentation and archiving
    [18 - 22 June 2012, Manila, Philippines]
    Thirty (30) census statisticians and IT specialists from 15 countries in Asia and the Pacific participated in a regional training workshop on the use of the IHSN Microdata Management Toolkit in documenting and archiving population census data. The PARIS21 Secretariat, the Asian Development Bank and the Statistical Institute for Asia and the Pacific organised the training which was designed to expose participants to relevant international standards and tools for census microdata documentation and archiving, initiate the documentation of one of the latest population censuses, by each country, and discuss strategic and technical issues relating to microdata dissemination.    Read more...

  •       Regional Training Workshop on the 2010 round of Population and Housing Censuses and Evidence Based Policy Making , Chiba, Japan [7 – 11 May 2012]
    The SIAP workshop was conducted in collaboration with UNFPA Asia and the Pacific Regional Office and Australian Bureau of Statistics.
    As a result of the workshop, participants are expected to have: (a) better understanding on the data requirements of policy makers to address the changing socio-economic conditions in their countries; and (b) increased awareness on the requirements of building organizational capability in enhancing visibility, accessibility and use of census data.    Read more...
