As a part of the ESCAP’s Project “Promoting Regional and Economic Cooperation in North East Asia with Particular focus on Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK)”, the SIAP and the Statistical Research and Training Center (SRTC) of Government of the Philippines organised a training course on Improving Statistical Capability in Compiling National Accounts for International Comparison: Basics of the 2008 System of National Accounts (SNA) for the officials of Democratic People’s Republic of Korea during 7th October to 6th November. The training course involved activities to strengthen the capacity of Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) officials and professionals to make effective contributions in the development of a statistical base for assessing socio-economic progress, especially those pertaining to national accounts and economic statistics.
The resource persons for the course were mainly drawn from Philippine National Statistical Coordination Board (NSCB). A few sessions were also taken by resource persons from ESCAP and the SIAP.
The main objectives of the course was to strengthen the capacity of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) statisticians for producing national accounts and economic statistics in accordance with international concepts and standards and to review the current compilation practices for purposes of improving the quality and coverage DPRK’s national accounts statistics. Through this training, the officials and statisticians of the DPRK gained better knowledge on the statistical standards, frameworks, methods and data sources in producing and compiling national accounts statistics following the 2008 SNA framework.
