Strengthening the Capacity to Produce Official Statistics for Monitoring Progress in Achieving the SDGs

[22 August – 16 December 2016, Chiba, Japan]

The United Nations Statistical Institute for Asia and the Pacific (SIAP), in collaboration with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), and the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC), government of Japan, will conduct “First Group Training Programme on Improving Capability in Producing Official Statistics for Monitoring the Post-2015 Sustainable Development Goals” (ICPOS-SDG-1) at its premises in Chiba, Japan from 22 August to 16 December 2016.

The main objective of the training course is to strengthen capacity of organizations belonging to national statistical systems to increase their knowledge and develop their skills to produce data, apply statistical methods to produce official statistics and indicators and interpret and use these for monitoring progress in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

This course is designed for junior- to middle- level government statisticians who have been working at least 5 years in national statistical offices or government offices engaged in statistical work. 20 participants from 15 countries in Asia-Pacific region and other regions (Africa and South America), namely Bangladesh, Bhutan, Ecuador, Egypt, Ethiopia, Ghana, Iraq, Lao P.D.R., Malaysia, Mauritius, Myanmar, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tajikistan, and Timor-Leste, are attending the course.

The core phase was preceded by the Preparatory e-Learning Course on Basic Statistics, which has been conducted 1 – 14 August 2016. The objective of the e-learning course was to ensure that participants of the training course were better prepared for the four-month on-site phase at SIAP.
